The Old Southeast Neighborhood Association (OSNA) is excited to move forward with the revitalization of our tree canopy through our OSNA Tree Canopy Grant. This initiative is made possible by a hurricane recovery grant from the Harborage Marina and the OSNA general fund contributing a total of $1,500 to help restore and enhance the greenery in our community.

Grant Program Details

The OSNA Tree Canopy Grant provides seed’ money to Old Southeast residents to assist in purchasing new trees for their properties. Each participating resident will receive up to $100 toward the purchase of an approved tree. The trees will be sourced from Wise Hands, a reputable nursery, and will be professionally planted and staked where applicable.

OSNA Makes It Easy for You!

OSNA will handle everything—from ordering the tree and coordinating delivery to having it professionally planted. We take all the work out of getting a tree! Simply choose your planting location, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Resident Responsibilities:

  • Watering the tree regularly, as per the guidelines below.
  • Selecting the tree location (either private property or the public property surrounding their home).

Tree Selection & Planting Guidelines

In August 2023, OSNA volunteers conducted a thorough tree inventory, recording over 700 trees in our neighborhood. The breakdown of tree coverage was as follows:

  • Live Oak – 21%
  • Sabal Palm – 14%
  • Foxtail Palm – 8.4%
  • Seagrape – 5.2%
  • Laurel Oak – 4.7%

Due to significant canopy loss from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we are prioritizing the following Native trees for replanting:

  • Large Canopy Trees: Live Oak (Quercus virginiana
  • Large Canopy Trees: Gumbo Limbo (Bursera simaruba)
  • Medium Size Trees: Pigeon Plum (Coccoloba diversifolia
  • Small Trees: Marlberry (Ardisia escallonioides

These trees have been selected based on their suitability for our Zone 10a climate, wind resistance, drought tolerance, shade canopy, growth rate, and light requirements.

Watering Schedule

  • First 30 days: Daily watering
  • Following 30 days: Every other day (depending on rainfall)

The OSNA Tree Committee will be available to answer any questions and will check on the trees' health and watering needs for up to three months after planting. Reach us by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
