The Old Southeast Neighborhood Association (OSNA) is excited to announce a new program to help restore the beautiful tree canopy in our neighborhood. Thanks to a generous $1,250 grant from Harborage Marina following the double Hurricanes, plus additional contributions by OSNA’s general fund, we have $1,500 to support this initiative!

Revitalizing the Old Southeast Tree Canopy

Here’s how it works:

  • OSNA will contribute $50 toward the purchase of a tree for 30 Old Southeast residents.
  • Residents can purchase a 15-gallon tree for $250 for a designated tree type.
  • Each tree will be sourced from a reputable local nursery and professionally planted and staked.
  • Trees can be placed on private property or in the public area surrounding your home.
  • We will coordinate mass planting within the community with the nursery.
  • Residents agree to water their new trees to ensure their growth and success.

Why This Program Matters

During our August 2023 tree inventory, volunteers counted over 700 trees and found the following canopy coverage in our neighborhood:

  • 21% Live Oak
  • 14% Sabal Palm
  • 8.4% Foxtail Palm
  • 5.2% Seagrape
  • 4.7% Laurel Oak

Unfortunately, hurricanes Helene and Milton caused significant loss of large canopy trees like Live Oaks and Laurel Oaks. This program aims to help replace these losses and enhance our neighborhood’s tree coverage.

Tree Selection and Grants

For this first round of funding, 30 grants are available to residents. Trees were carefully selected based on their suitability for our zone (10a), wind resistance, growth rate, drought tolerance, and shade potential. The trees available include:

  • 40% Large Canopy Trees (10 Live Oaks): Quercus virginiana
  • 40% Medium Trees (10 trees): Pigeon Plum (Coccoloba diversifolia), Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)
  • 20% Small Trees (10 trees): Marlberry (Ardisia escallonioides)

Planting guidelines and care instructions will be provided to ensure every tree thrives.

Let’s work together to bring shade, beauty, and life back to Old Southeast!

Keep an eye out for details to come shortly.
